News is breaking of seven Al-Shabaab militants executed in Puntland, north-east Somalia. The chairperson of Puntland’s military court said five militants were caught trying to transport explosives and a further two murdered people in the city of Galkayo.
This comes in the same month as Al-Shabaab killed 59 people at an air base in Af Urur. Al-Shabaab are allied with Al-Qaeda and are seeking to overthrow the Western-backed Government in the capital of Mogadishu. They seek to bring in their own severe version of sharia law.
The group have seen themselves driven out of southern regions by the Somali army and African Union peacekeeping forces. As a result, they have gone further north and have increased operations in Puntland.
