The Charleton Inquiry will view the evidence of a smear campaign against Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe. The initial allegations centres on Sgt McCabe inappropriately touching the daughter of another Garda at a birthday party. It later came to light these were made up and Tusla handing over the files at a time when the Garda Commissioner was questioning McCabe’s motivation is very suspicious.
The investigation will look at how these false allegations came about and how the files found their way to Gardaí. Also, it is important to point out that McCabe was unaware of these files until much later. According to the Irish Examiner, the “task under reference d states: “To investigate the creation, distribution and use by Tusla of a file containing false allegations of sexual abuse against Sergeant Maurice McCabe that was allegedly sent to Gardai in 2013, and whether these false allegations and/or the file were knowingly used by senior members of An Garda Siochana to discredit Sergeant McCabe.””
When the file was filled out, a previous case was used as a template and as a result, the accusations against McCabe were much more serious, including digital penetration. What the outcome will be can only be speculated for now, but given the numerous errors (or were they?) people will have to be removed from their posts, that much is clear already.
