Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that Russia reserved the right to reduce the number of US diplomats currently in Russia. This is in response to US actions regarding Russian officials on its soil, a move that Moscow regards as “boorish and unprecedented”.
The US seized control of three Russian diplomatic posts after the Trump administration ordered the diplomats there to leave. The Russians said US officials threatened to break down the doors, something the US has denied. Putin said that he would order the Foreign Ministry to take legal action over violations of Russian property rights.
All of this comes at a time when North Korea and the situation in Syria are severely testing the patience of the international community. Whether the US and Russia can put their differences aside and work on these very important issues we will have to wait and see. Hopefully, they can.
